Gambaga Witches Camp

When the wrong choices we make in life come back at us, we look for who to blame. In most parts of Northern Ghana, the aged, the poor and the "different" is constantly preyed upon by society; and either get banished or killed.

This is a photograph I made in Gambaga in the Upper East Region of Ghana, on assignment for AWDF. The chief of this village created a refuge for persecuted old people accused of witchcraft.

The woman in the photograph had just gone to fetch water from a well to go and do her household chores. She is a native of the village and not one of the accused.
