Ghanaians kissing in public? Since When?

I was born in Ghana, raised in Ghana and I currently live in Ghana. I'm used to seeing people kissing in public but not in Ghana. Recently at the beach, I saw this couple giving it a go. I was surprised. What surprised me even more was the fact that I was surprised. I also noticed nobody really paid attention to them. Are Ghanaians now used to kissing in public? Am I stuck back in time? Funny how they chose to stand by a canoe that says "noko ye dzen" which means" There are strange things in this world". I can hear my grandmother saying that if she ever saw this couple kissing in public.

Lol, I loooove kissing in public and public displays of affection in general. If I am with someone and fancy kissing them why wait till I get indoors. It's a bit more exciting to kiss in public too.

@ Oluniyi - It's good to know I'm not alone.

@ Nana -Personally, I think public display of affection is great. It's just that I'm not used to seeing people kiss on the streets of Accra. It's just not Ghanaian... but culture is dynamic so may be we are here now.

@ Anon- Times have changed haven't they?

Oh, it is very common in Ghana these days... especially on the beaches, I've seen it being done a couple of times!

Times changing. I remember back in '97 or so I was in Ghana with my girlfriend at the time and, coming from Europe, that was pretty normal. So my dad pulls me aside one day and says to me in conversation that Ghana is not ready for that. And he meant it so innocently.

@ The African Princess - I'm glad you are not surprised. I looked at your profile and noticed you are a generation younger. This for me is clear indication that your Ghana is quite different from mine or Teddy's or Davids or Anon's.

The point isn't that we are old school. The point is that, Ghana is really changing fast and as Anon said, "there is still more to come".

I happened to see a Ghanaian couple at it the last time i went shopping at the Accra Mall. They look so cute together but, I must ask this question:
Of all the places on the beach, why did they have to choose a spot so close to the refuse dump to make out? Eye Asem ooo...

I guess this is what globalisation and the effects of cultural imperialism in terms of a dominant Western culture can do..
